Recollections Of A Band

If you’re a fan of Beach House, the band, please read my friends article/interview with a member of Daggerhearts, the pre Beach House band.

Yeah, I'm Blogging That

Daggerhearts – Victoria Legrand, Dirck Ober, Lauren Turek

I’ll begin by giving you the story behind the story. I like to think that fate brings to us the people and the things we are destined to find. I’m crediting fate for allowing me to find my friend Terry one day while surfing Reddit. We began chatting about Beach House rarities, both of us being diehard fans of the band, and he happened to mention that Victoria Legrand was in a band before Beach House…which I already knew, however, I didn’t know the name of the band. Terry did. The band was called Daggerhearts with Victoria Legrand (vocals/keyboard), Dirck Ober (guitar) and Lauren Turek (bass/backing vocals). Terry had discovered the band’s name several months earlier and was in the process of obtaining a long sought after and extremely rare copy of their only pressed vinyl album called Who We Were.

I’m feeling conflicted again about this blog. I want to share my haiku around willy-nilly, and I’d like to submit them to haiku journals, that always request you submit unpublished ones, and WordPress is considered published. What to do? Put ones I’m not as fond of on my blog so the ones I love have a chance of getting published in journals? Anyone else have any thoughts?

The plagiarist.

This last week I discovered that a former poetry mentor of mine was “caught” plagiarising. This happened in 2013, just after I drifted away from local poetry circles, so I had no idea it happened! I have fond memories of doing a series of ginko’s (haiku walks) with him, and a whole bunch of good people. I thought I’d look him up, and found his blog gone, the poetry group that had monthly meetings ceased also. His last tweet was from that year also. I felt quite sad. I don’t condone plagiarism, but it’s not the worst thing a person can do, although it is duplicitous. The sad thing to me, is that the poetry community here has lost a great poet (some disagree about his greatness), he pulled all his books from sale. But more than that the group has gone and now there’s less of a community for those who love poetry. Hopefully something will come along. I will always love his haiku, especially his one about cursing the beauty of jacaranda flowers as he raked them up in his yard.

The lyrebird is an amazing mimick. Jacarandas turn Brisbane purple when they blossom.
